USHIO Establishes New Medical/Biotechnology Company in China
— Establishing R&D and Market Expansion Base via Joint Venture with Local Medical Device Technology Development & Sales Company —
USHIO INC. (HQ: Tokyo; President and CEO: Kenji Hamashima) announces the establishment of an R&D, manufacture, and sales company for advanced medical and peripheral devices within China made possible via a joint venture between two of USHIO's wholly owned subsidiaries, USHIO (SUZHOU) CO., LTD. (hereinafter "USHIO SUZHOU") and USHIO SHANGHAI, INC. (hereinafter "USHIO SHANGHAI"), and Sun-Bio Medical Device Co.,Ltd. (HQ: Shanghai, China; President: Jiang Siwei ; hereinafter "Sun-Bio"), a Chinese medical device technology development and sales company.
Coinciding with the development of its national medical insurance system, a substantial increase in domestic manufacture of as well as demand for medical devices is expected in China due to current national-policy pushes. Meanwhile, Japanese manufacturers still retain their reputation for exceptional reliability. USHIO already manufactures and sells ultraviolet phototherapy devices for skin, animal blood testing equipment, and other medical devices within China*1, while Sun-Bio owns a patent for precancerous lesion diagnosis in addition to holding stable distribution channels with the Chinese government and local medical facilities.
With the establishment of the new company and coordinated use of the mutual resources of both parties, USHIO intends not only to build an R&D base and expand its market channels within China, but also position the company as a primary base for USHIO Group's medical and biotechnology ventures in Asia that can swiftly respond to the demands of its diverse markets.
The newly-built offices and factory of the new company are located in the Suzhou New District where the Jiangsu Medtech Innovation Hub*2, a part of China's national industrial development, is also located. The new company is expected to handle operations for USHIO's ultraviolet phototherapy devices for skin, animal blood testing equipment, and other existing devices starting March 2017, while sales of new products are expected by July of the same year.

*1 In 2008, USHIO developed the TheraBeam® UV308, an ultraviolet phototherapy device for skin equipped with USHIO's own light source. Today about 500 of the devices are in use in six countries around the world. Animal blood testing equipment is also manufactured and distributed by USHIO.
